Getting Out Of Sadness

In our previous post we wrote about dealing with sadness, which explored different ways of looking at sadness. In this post we’ll take a look at techniques to help you take action and get out of sadness.

As you already know, here at Wellington Estates “our mission and passion is to ensure that our seniors are pampered with whatever it takes to make them happy and comfortable.”

So, here are three relatively straightforward strategies for getting out of sadness.

Music

Music is a very powerful tool. And it can be used to rapidly change your mood too. If you’re into music, you’ve definitely realized how different songs, tunes, instruments, singers, etc. arouse different emotions in you. You can’t really picture people dancing wildly to a piece of classical music, can you? That’s because your system is in a very different state. The same is true for upbeat, happy music. It’s much harder to stay down and sad when your senses are taking in the positive vibes.

Physiology

Charlie Brown in speaking of his “depressed stance” said “when you’re depressed, it makes a lot of difference how you stand. The worst thing you can do is straighten up and hold your head high because then you’ll start to feel better. It you’re going to get any joy out of being depressed, you’ve go to stand like this,” as he demonstrated bending his head down and staring at the ground, gloomily.

Your physiology makes a huge difference when it comes to your mood. To get out of sadness, pose and act like someone who is the opposite of that.

Friends

Isolation can make people feel lonely, which can then lead to them feeling sad. Getting together with friends and family may be an antidote for this. Social connections are very important especially for seniors. So make a list. Who can you count on when you need it? Is there someone you can count on? Make sure to have their number handy.

Remember, some situations are more serious and may require medical help or professional intervention. So these ideas aren’t meant to replace professional care.
