Dealing With The Winter Blues And Seasonal Affective Disorder

When seasons change, it isn’t only the temperature that’s different. For many people their moods are also affected. This is known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

Seasonal Affective Disorder

According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA), “people with SAD experience mood changes and symptoms similar to depression. The symptoms usually occur during the fall and winter months when there is less sunlight and usually improve with the arrival of spring. The most difficult months for people with SAD in the U.S. tend to be January and February. While it is much less common, some people experience SAD in the summer.”

The fewer hours of sunlight during the winter, may also lead to more melatonin, which might make people sadder. Either way, dealing with the winter blues, for those who struggle isn’t always easy.

Tips For Dealing With The Winter Blues

While you should visit you doctor if you suspect depression, there are some simple measures you take for dealing with the winter blues. Here are three. These may be especially helpful in milder cases when your feeling a bit down.

Music

Music is a very powerful tool. Think of how you feel different when you hear different genres of music. You can use this to your advantage. Next time you feel down, turn up some of your favorite happy music. It may completely change how you feel.

Social Company

Being with family and friends is powerful. Did you ever notice how much happier you feel when you are with people you love? It’s very different than feeling lonely, right? So what can you do to get some of these people near you the next time you feel blue?

Pictures

Do you like looking at pictures? It probably isn’t only about the actual memories they conjure. There’s an emotional energy that comes along with going through these enjoyable moments. An album of happy times may be what you need to get you out of that tough spot.

Keep in mind, though, these feelings can also work the other way around. You might yearn for happier times and feel worse about right now after seeing a couple of old pictures. If you feel this way, skip the pics and meet some friends instead.
