Self-Care While Caring For An Elderly Parent

Self-Care While Caring For An Elderly Parent

Caring for an elderly parent can demand lots of energy and resources. You need to devote time, offer support, make arrangements and deal with a lot of situations that require emotional strength.

Since you don’t want your loved one to suffer in any way, you demand the utmost of yourself, yet you may often feel that you’re coming up short.

If you add children, who are dependent on you, to the equation, the stress and possibility of burnout rise dramatically.

The truth is no one sets out to become resentful or burned-out. They try their best and have their loved one’s best intentions in mind.

The Cost of Care Without Self

So, what goes wrong?

Self-care.

As someone caring for others, you see yourself as a giver. And a giver is the opposite of a taker. You value putting other people’s needs before your own and may even feel guilty thinking about your needs, let alone your wants.

But here’s the catch: your resources are finite and the more you give, the more you need to replenish. So, by the time you’re really feeling like it is too much, your tank may be running on close to empty. This isn’t about self-indulgence but self-care. There’s a big difference. Maybe it can be the factor that makes the difference for you.

Part of our ability to help your loved ones here at Wellington Estates is due to our value of self-care. We realize that caring + cared-for staff = cared-for residents. Add this element to your equation and see the results for yourself.

Relax and Enjoy

When can you set aside time to do something relaxing and enjoyable? Can you find an hour to read or go for a walk? Maybe you can listen to music, get together with friends or spend time with your spouse. Whatever you decide, the main idea is to set the time aside and intentionally nourish yourself.

Your mom or dad will be happy you did.

Do you take time for self-care?
