World Antibiotic Awareness Week - Antibiotic resistance poses a big threat to global health

World Antibiotic Awareness Week (WAAW) generally focuses on a specific overarching theme. This year is an exception, though. The World Health Organization (WHO) decided to leave this year open. But one thing is clear: “Change can’t wait. Our time with antibiotics is running out.”

So what’s causing the uproar?

The answer in one word: Superbugs.

Superbugs

Superbugs are bacterial infections that medicine doesn’t have a solution for yet.

As opposed to regular bacteria, superbugs aren’t responsive to antibiotics. This happens through a process known as antibiotic resistance.

Antibiotic Resistance

As antibiotic use increases, microbes get used to them. Once this happens too much they can stop responding. In other words, they become resistant to antibiotics. So as people and animals all around the globe consume antibiotics, its effect is weakened and this poses a risk to global health.

In truth, there is much we do to exacerbate the problem through improper use of antibiotics.

By becoming aware of antibiotics and best practices we can help in battling antibiotic resistance.

Battling Antibiotic Resistance

Battling antibiotic resistance begins with prevention. By maintaining proper hygiene, we can keep illness from spreading thus lowering the need for medication in the first place. Make sure to wash your hands when necessary, for example. It’s simple but it goes a long way in stopping germs.

Another preventative measure is vaccination. Proper immunization may lower the risk of getting sick and abusing antibiotics.

A common misconception about antibiotics is that it is an all-purpose drug. It is not. Antibiotics are intended for curing bacterial infections not viruses. That means if you have a cold or even the flu, don’t assume you need antibiotics.

People also assume that they can take antibiotics as they see fit. Don’t make this mistake. Make sure to speak to your doctor and get the right dosage from a trusted source. Also, don’t use leftovers.

Let’s take a moment this World Antibiotic Awareness Week and spread the knowledge and awareness so that we help keep the world a healthier place.
