The flu season may almost be behind New Jersey for this year, but that doesn’t mean throat pain is over.

A sore throat can be pretty painful. And this isn’t only about your throat, a sore throat can cause you to eat less and weaken the rest of your body.

While a sore throat is often a sign of something more serious, like strep, which is typically treated by antibiotics, you might be surprised to know that there are also natural remedies you can try to soothe your aching throat.

So, first things first, if your throat starts to hurt, have your doctor check it out. Next, here are 3 remedies you can try to ease and soothe your pain.

Salt water

Gargling warm water with salt can provide your throat with relief, says the Mayo Clinic. The recommended dosage is “1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of table salt to 4 to 8 ounces of warm water.”

Warm Tea and Soup

Hot soup may be one of the oldest known health remedies known to grandmothers. Who can argue with the soothing effect of a steaming tea or soup on your lungs.

There is a significant emphasis on the warm temperature. According to a study, “[a] hot drink provided immediate and sustained relief from symptoms of runny nose, cough, sneezing, sore throat, chilliness and tiredness, whereas the same drink at room temperature only provided relief from symptoms of runny nose, cough and sneezing.”

Garlic

Yes, garlic. I can imagine your resistance to putting a clove of garlic into your mouth. But, if it helps your throat, you’d probably prefer the alternative. Garlic has a chemical called allicin which can destroy bacteria contributing to your sore throat. It also has antibacterial, antiseptic and other medicinal properties.
