You may have not given much thought to the chair you’re sitting in. As long as it doesn’t make you uncomfortable you’re okay.
But chairs are very important especially when it comes to seniors.
One issue many seniors face is getting up. Seniors who have trouble standing up need to put in a lot of effort to get out of their chairs.
At Wellington Estates, we help your loved one’s struggling with mobility and realize the burden this places on them.
The good news is that part of the solution has to do with the actual chair. So choosing the right chair for seniors that struggle getting up is critical.
We’ll keep it simple and focus on 2 areas:
Chair Height
Researchers studying the effects of chair height and chair-rise performance found that when frail senior’s chair height increased from 17 to 22 inches, the seniors had an easier time getting up.
A chair too high, though, “will put too much pressure on the back of the thighs and the feet won’t touch the floor, making it more uncomfortable when sitting.”
Higher is better but only until a certain point. So it’s about finding the right balance.
Arm Support
Arm rests allow you to push or pull when getting up. Without arm rests, seniors often try to pull themselves up using other objects. But this can be very dangerous because unsteady objects can lead to falls.
So if the chair is sturdy, the arm rests can provide a safe support area.
With the right chair and overall care, your loved one can feel comfortable and stay healthy in their seats. Just make sure not to sit for too long before getting up.
What has helped your loved one get up easier?
