Your vision is one of the greatest gifts you were given. But if you’re not careful with it, you’re eyesight may suffer as you get older.
Some age-related conditions that can cause damage to your eyes include age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), cataracts, and glaucoma.
Thankfully, with certain lifestyles changes, you can lower your risk of developing these diseases, says Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Here are three suggestions you may want to adopt in order to to protect your eyes as you age.
General Health
Healthy eyesight is connected to a healthy body. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services offer the following tips for healthy eyes:
- Give up smoking
- Eat the right foods
- Get your weight under control
- Keep active
- If you have diabetes, control it
Eye Protection
There are also specific steps that deal with your eyes directly, which you can take to keep your eyes healthy:
- Wear sunglasses – These can protect you from UV rays
- Put on a hat with a wide brim – This too can help you stay safe from UV radiation
- Avoid straining your eyes – Look away from the computer every 20 minutes to a distance of about 20 feet for 20 seconds.
Additionally, make sure to schedule regular eye exams and appointments with your doctor to stay on top of your health and catch anything dangerous to your eyes early on.
