If you do you know that this seemingly minor annoyance can be extremely disturbing. And in some cases, it may even be dangerous.

What Causes Dry Eyes?

What causes dry eyes is rather simple: Your eye has a natural lubricant, which keeps them moist. These are your tears, of course. When your tears can’t keep your eyes lubricated adequately, you get dry eyes.

Your eyes may stop producing adequate tears for several reasons. According to the Mayo Clinic, these can include ageing, inflammation or radiation that caused damage to the tear glands, certain medications, laser eye surgery, and certain medical conditions, including diabetes and vitamin A deficiency, among others.

There are actually several medical terms for dry eye syndrome, including keratitis sicca, keratoconjunctivitis sicca, and dysfunctional tear syndrome.

Treating Dry Eyes

There are numerous ways to deal with dry eyes. Here are three very simple, yet important suggestions for treating dry eyes.

Artificial Tears

Artificial tears, or eye drops, are very common. They’re those little bottles people carry around and squeeze its contents into their eyes.

They’re helpful for less serious cases of dry eyes, which may come from reading or looking at a computer screen for a long period of time, for example.

Water

Drinking more water can also be beneficial for your dry eyes and hydrate them.

Omega 3

Omega 3 has been shown to help reduce symptoms of dry eyes.
