Coming To Terms With Your Parents’ Aging

Change isn’t easy. This is especially true when the change comes along with negatively held interpretations, like ageing and disability. So, it is understandable that your loved one may have to go through a process in coming to terms with new realities and dealing with the emotional difficulties of assisted living.

But, it isn’t only about your loved one. It’s also about you. Coming to terms with your parents’ aging can be a process and a part of you would rather not view changes related to ageing as a new stage. It can be scary.

What Coming to Terms Looks Like

However, coming to terms with your parents’ aging, isn’t about having a pessimistic outlook. It’s about adapting and acknowledging reality for what it is without exaggerating it.

It is also about using your knowledge to provide your parents with the best care available per their needs and circumstances.

And finally, it’s about the message you give over. When you communicate (not necessarily verbally) positivity, acceptance and belief, your loved one can pick up on it too. Facing the situation, instead of pretending it doesn’t exist, may just give your parents a sense of calm.

Often, much of the fear is just a psychological association, which can be acknowledged and framed in a positive light. When it comes to assisted living, for example, we at Wellington Estates see it as “let the good times begin.”

It’s about perspective.
